The Legacy Project is a video series that showcases the experiences and perspectives of former Manitoban MLAs and MPs to pass onto young citizens the value of public service to our province.

Message to Members and Visitors

Former MLA Leonard.jpg

On behalf of the Executive, welcome to the updated website for the Association of Former Members of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly (AFMMLA). We hope this website will serve as a source of information for anyone with an emerging or an enduring interest in democracy.  This site will also serve as a forum for continued contact amongst former Manitoba MLAs, as well as Manitoba MPs who are associate members of AFMMLA.  We acknowledge that as former members our shared experience was focused on partisan electoral processes and the Legislative Assembly.  However, we know that the strength of democracy is deeply rooted in our communities and nurtured by citizen engagement in a wide range of community interests.  With that in mind, it is important to note that the AFMMLA is committed by our founding legislation to conduct its activities in a non-partisan manner and in a respectful, collaborative spirit.  We affirm our commitment to non-partisanship in all our efforts and activities.

The following pages will provide contact information as well as other details including our brief historical background, the founding legislation and our by-laws.  Also listed are links to various related organizations across Canada as well as sources of information for use by educators, students and other interested groups.   With the rapid evolution of digital communication, we will make an effort to include podcasts, videos, news articles and links to groups across the world that contribute to our understandings, discussions and knowledge.  In closing, AFFMLA members have experience and knowledge that we are happy to share, but if we can serve as a catalyst to support the knowledge and efforts of existing groups, we are happy to contribute in that fashion.

“Democracy is not a spectator event; we need more participants.”

Leonard Harapiak, AFMMLA President

This initiative was a collaboration with the Louis Riel School Division and was made possible through grants from the Winnipeg Foundation and generous individual donors. Students from the Broadcast Media class at the Louis Riel Arts & Technology Centre conducted interviews with nine former Members, each representing a different political party. The politicians featured in the interviews include John Harvard, Ed Schreyer, Glen Cummings, Gary Filmon, Myrna Philips, Eric Robinson, Sig Enns, Bonnie Mitchelson, and Muriel Smith.
